Thread turning

The thread turning is a machining method particularly suited for producing various thread profiles through turning. This process is especially significant in the manufacturing of threaded parts, such as screws, nuts, and bolts. Thread turning differs from other turning methods primarily by utilizing thread turning tools specifically designed to match the shape of the thread profile. It is based on the use of a cutting tool corresponding to the profile of the thread, which works with a feed movement matching the thread pitch.

Furthermore, modern CAM software has introduced significant improvements to thread turning, allowing for the design and implementation of complex and unique thread profiles. CAM software enables the creation of precise machining paths for various thread profiles, speeding up the manufacturing process and reducing the possibility of errors. Shape thread turning enabled by CAM software allows for the production of a wide range of threads, including special threads such as trapezoidal threads and rope threads.

In the thread turning process, both partial profile and full-profile thread inserts are used, allowing for an accurate and smooth surface quality and correct thread geometry. A special method that can be mentioned is OptiThreading, which is used particularly in the processing of softer, long-chipping materials. In this method, the thread tool makes withdrawal movements during the machining path, breaking the turning chip and thus improving the quality of machining.
