Parting and grooving
Parting and grooving are two essential machining methods in turning.
Parting-off is a process where a desired piece is cut off from the material. Parting-off often takes place in a lathe, where the tool moves transversally relative to the workpiece, cutting it off. Parting-off is one of the basic operations in machine shop industry and plays a key role in serial production with lathes that utilize bar feeders. Parting tools are specialized for this task and are designed to withstand high loads and vibration, which are typical during parting.
Grooving, as the name suggests, focuses on creating grooves in the material. Grooving can be used for many purposes, such as creating retaining ring grooves, making seal ring grooves, or manufacturing belt grooves. A groove can be deep or shallow, wide or narrow, depending on its intended purpose. Grooving uses specialized grooving tools that enable precise and efficient groove manufacturing.
